BMC Extern Program

A message from BMC/HC Career Development:

We invite you to participate in the EXTERN PROGRAM for Bryn Mawr and Haverford Colleges. This program is an especially beneficial way for students to gain first-hand exposure to career fields of interest. By shadowing professionals in their workplace, students can begin to explore their interests and learn about various opportunities. Your advice and guidance will help a student to begin to identify potential career options. Every year, we are delighted to report that this program has more and more student interest!

The Extern Program is offered two different times of the year: Winter Break and Spring Break. Both are popular time periods for students and sponsors. The Winter Break (January 5-16, 2009) offering provides for flexibility in length and structure of an externship; you could develop an experience for 2 days to 2 weeks. Spring Break, a period of one week (March 9-13, 2009), allows for 2-5 day opportunities. Your work schedule may be more suited to an offering in one or both seasons. The choice is yours. If you are unable to host a student in your workplace, we also are seeking alumni to house students while they are participating on their externship.

Selection of the student externs will be held at two separate times: mid-November for the Winter Break offerings, and early-February for the Spring Break offerings. After our office makes assignments in November and February, we will send you notification of student assignments and the extern will then contact you directly to make specific arrangements.

If you would like to serve as an Extern Sponsor for either or both time frames, by October 3 please complete the on-line registration form. Or you can downlowd, print, and return the questionnaire by email to or by fax 610-896-4230. To assist you in planning the externship, some suggestions in sponsoring an extern are located here. If you have questions, please feel free to give me a call at 610-896-1181.

Thank you very much for considering to assist Bryn Mawr and Haverford students.
